MANUAL AND TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION,
PREPARATIONS BY THE DEPAET- * MENT. TIMARU, November 24. Mr- Hogben, Secretary of Education, explained to a meeting of tihe teachers the bearings of the Manual and Technical Instruction Act. He recommended getting the co-operation of businesses and trades to make the act a success. He intimated that at the conference of inspectors the ■ syllabus would probably fee revised to give time for manual instruction in " school classes. ' - Boards of Education should make early arrangements for the instruction of teachers. He emphasised as important the experience at "Home that it
was useless attempting to give technical education to pupils whose general education was deficient, hence continuation schools were necessary to fit pupils for technical schools. It has been found difficult to get pupils for continuation schools, but this might disappear if made a necessary stepping stone to the technical school. It was not intended to supply instructors, but two of the best men available would be appointed to go round the districts and assist the local authorities to organise classes.
