THE UNION JACK FOR THE HETV ZEALAND SCHOOLS.

We have received a number of letters from residents in country districts asking for information as to the making of flags in Dunedin, the cost of same, etc. It is apparent that there is a strong feeling that the movement, token up with such enthtisia&m in Victoria, for providing each school

in the colony with a Union Jack is looked ivpon with favour in Otago, but if anything practical is to result ithose who take an interest in public affairs in the country — ■and particularly those who desire to keep alive in the minds of our children a warm feeling towards the flag under whose protection and inspiriting influence their lives are to be spent — must bestir themselves and undertake the work necessary to carry the movement forward. The Otago Education Board are ' evidently warmly in sympathy with the proposal- that the schools under their care should do their part in flying on suitable occasions' the national emblem, and thus mark the pride and satisfaction felt . by .teachers and taught that they are members of a nation whose watchwords are freedom and jtistice. We reproduce the board's courteous acknowledgment of the Daily Times Company's offer to supply the school which is under the 'board's direct control with a Union Jack. It will no doubt encourage the members of committees and others who are interested in the children attending the .suburban and country schools to see that flags are provided in time for a great display at the inauguration of the new century. Mr P. G. Pryde, t-he secretary of the 'board, writes as follows: — "I have the honour to inform you that your letter of the 14th inst. offering, on behalf of ~tlie Otago Daily Times and Witness Company (Limited), to present to the Noimal School a Union Jack of suitable dimensions was laid before, the Education Board at its meeting to-day, when 1 was directed to say that the board accepts with hearty thanks the offer made by your company. I . am further requested to say ihat the board highly appreciates the genez'osity and public spirit evinced by your company -in presenting a school flag to each oi the Dunedin public schools." We hope to be able to publish in an early i?sue a list of schools fov which flags are already promised, and shall 'be glad to receive letters conveying this information from persons throughout the education district who have the matter in hand, and who are in a position to report definitely.
