A parcel which only cost 7s 6d to come byboat from Auckland to Napier cost 17s from. Napier to Wopdville, says the Examiner. At the Magistrate's Court at Mosgiel on) Friday, before ' Messrs T. .Aitken and W. ' Carncross, J.P.s, William Hunter was fined £1 on a charge of discharging a pea riflo across a road. Constable Christie gave evidence that on the occasion complained of the bullet had passed through a window in Mrs * Meharry's house and flattened up against a wall. Sitting at the window when the bulleu passed through was a little girl. Fortunately the "bullet passed through the upper part of the* -window, aboA'e the girl, Mr Oarncrose, speaking for the bench, said the pea-rifle nuisance was increasing to an alarming extent, and it was high time it was suppressed. He also stated that in future cases the full penalty of JBS would probably be imposed.
