WAITAHUNA

November 20 — After the heavy rain last Friday and Saturday the river rose rapidly and flooded Havelock Flat from Mrs Cutler's corner [ down to the township. Below the township the reserve was an unbroken expanse of water. Along the gully road, where a swift current was running, the road was washed clear of gravel, and most of the gardens and a few houses were inundated. Mr W. Quigley's fluming was carried away, and the tools, timber, etc., from the "Waitahuna Gully Dredging Company's dredge went down stream, though most of the timber was recovered a few miles from where it -started. On Sunday morning the spectacle of two swans sailing majestically up the river can&ed much srirprisc and spetmlation as to where they had come from. They were evidently far out of their usual haunts. By Monday rnoring the water had entirely subsided, and since then the weather has been * perfect. Dredging. — The Adam's Flat dredge is in course of transit from Adam's Flat to Waitahuna. This dredge is of iron, and when constructed will be the fifth on the Waitahuna Eiver. Camp Notes. — The Tuapeka Mounted Bines had anything but auspicious weather to start their first annual encampment, as oi\ Saturday it poured a deluge and fairly Bwamped the camp, necessarily postponing trie erection of "tents until Monday morning. ' Those of the Rifles who belonped to outside districts sought refuge in the Volunteei Hall and the different

hotels. However, the weather difficulti-s siirmounted, everything is ir perfect workn.g order now. Qaite a n.c^ber oi young men fiom the Waitahuna district have joined the co:j;, with Lieutenant ismcl'.r.
