CLYDE.
November 23. — The weather of the past month, has been entirely out of sympathy with the season, and though occasional showeis supplied sufficient moisture lor the crops, the atmosphere was, withal, so cold that but little gTowth ensued. Had the weather been at all warm and anything like seasonable, the crop.s would have been well advanced by now* as the .moisture was all that~could be lesired in our tisually dry climate. Tnen, again, our •nights were bitterly cold owing Lo a continuance of exceptionally late frosts that did some slight damage to fruit and to .the potato crop. Obituary.— Miss Attfield, eldest daughter of the late Mr Chas. and, Mrs Attfield,.,of Clyde, succumbed' to' a- lingering' illness at' her aunt's residence (Mrs C. .P. Beck), Alexandra, on Tuesday, the 13tb hist. The young lady was a native of Clyde, and was much esteemed by a wida circle of girl friends for her womanly goodness. For some months prior to her demise but small hope was entertained of hex recovery, the end coming at the date mentioned, but not unexpectedly even to the poor sufferer herself. The funeral was' largely attended by residents of this and the adjoining districts, the interment being at the Clyde cemetery, where the obsequies were conducted by the Rev. Mr Oldham, of St. Michael's and All Angels', Clyde. New Buildings.— The township is beginning to assume quite an air of importance, the buildings now in course oi erection being so far advanced" as to exhibit an outline of that solidity that may be expected upon their completion. The Dunstan Hotel building is well* forward, and -the contractor has already made a beginning at the foundation work of the Port Phillip Hotel. When completed these buildings will add a desirable air of stability to the' town, inasmuch -as they will contrast with many of the corrugated iron houses that still exist here, and have done duty since the days of the golden sixties. School Exam. — The children attending the local school were examined last week, and the creditable percentage of 93 was secured. The order and attention of the children ' was excellent. • V.C.H.S. — The people of "Cromwell have had charge of the affairs of, this society for some years past. It is hoped the committee will succeed in raising the wherewithal with which, to hold a show this incoming- season, otherwise this end of the county may be tempted to adopt a nolicy of separation. In failing id hold a show last year, the Cromwell people showed a lack of interestedness in the aims of the, society, the interests of which would have been well served had the Cromwell Committee inadp known their intention of not holding a show In sufficient time to enable either Clyde or Alexandra to take up the run- • ning. The decision of the Cromwell people will be eagerly looked forward to this year. No show no more shows' Entertainment — A number of young men gave a minstrel entertainment in the Town Hall recently, the proceeds from which go towards purchasing a piano for tie hall. The attendance was good, and, from what I can. learn, the young men carried their programme through with a fair amount of success.
