Mr Seddon has' replied that; the.men will join with pleasure if the Harlech Castle remains long enough at Porb Melbourne. < November 25. It appears that colonials who are not well off will have little chance of taking up the commissions offered to them in the British army. Every .colonial who takes up a commission will at first rank as at second lieutenant. The pay attaching to that rank is as follows : — Infantry, 5s 3d> per day ; cavalry, 6s 8d ; engineers, 5s 7d ;• horse artillery, 7s 8d ; garrison artillery, 5s 7d. In addition, there is a small allowance of about 2s a day during the time the officers are going through their examinations. There are also special supplementary allowances in the case of service in India, and Imperial officers serving in i South Africa receive an extra 2s 6d per, day when in camp, but under the present; system of the British army it is virtually impossible for an officer to enter the service unless he is possessed ot private means to supplement his pay.
