CROMWELL
November 17. — Last Wednesday was a great day among the local Freemasons, being the day of the dedication -and consecration of their 'new hall. The due ceremonies were conducted by the Rev. Mr Ronaldson, acting G.M., assisted by Bros. D. A. Jolly, Bell, Hmchcliffe, Foreman, "Velvin, Wishart, P.M.s. In the evening a ball was held, and proved a great success. The attendance was large, and the dresses of the ladies greatly enhanced their natural beauty. The whole function was very pleasing and successful. Show. — The annual show of the Upper Clutha Valley A. and P. Society comes off on Friday, and, given a good day, should prove veiy successful. I hear that a number of visitors are coming, and that entries will be large. Bazaar. — We are going to have a monster bazaar on race nights. Tire ladies of the local Catholic church are working hard to make it a success, and I prophesy a record return — Ranfurly and Hartley won't be in it. Of ,U1 the various ways of raising money for religions purposes, a bazaar is generally the most sucoessful. Everyone decries bazaars, goes 'to them, ancl comes home with a lot of articles bou, glit at<a bargain — a bazaar bargain ; a heavy load, bn,t a light pocket. However, churches "must have fuiids, and, having no power of taxation, must do the best they can. Sporting. — From what I hear, the race meeting this year promises to be very successful. Several local horses are- in training, and the programme submitted is a. good one.
