TUAPEKA WEST.
Novembei 17.— The weather has been stormy "and boisterous of late,- with a continuous garle, and rain and occasional hail showers, having a ' bad effect' on the growing cropg of ;ereals, and -also or, .grass. This is making feed for stock rather scarce, especially, with those who "are heavily stocked. Pastoral. — Lambing has been good, as duringthe early part -of the spring the weather was mild %T\d- dry: 100 and 13Q per cent, -is a fair, average. Warm r weather is -badlywanted to bring on the grass and to keep Hp th" condition, as lambs stunted- when young are never profitable sheep to be kept. Fat sheep are getting scarce here now. The prices have been pood, and consequently they have been " drafted and sent to the Burnside market. , School. — The local school was examined by Inspector Fitzgerald on Tuesday last, and I hear the results are good, approaching nearly 100 per cent. Mr G-rant, the teacher, is tc bar complimented on the excellent results. Amusements. — A concert held in the schoolroom last week in aid of the local volunteer corps must be termed a great success. . A very lengthy programme was gone through, lasting about two hours and a-half, wioh mostly all local talent. Lieutenant J. Smith, at the end of the programme, thanked all those who had -- contributed to the .evening's amusement, and intimated that there would be a parade in Lawrence on Wednesday in uniform, as nearly all ot the ( equipments are now. to hand. He apologised for the absence of Captain Pearson, who; intended to be present, but he had gone to Christchurch to hurry up the contract foi ,the leggings. The proceeds of the concert amounted I to about £7.
