THE HARTLEY AND RILEY COMPANY.
Mr R. T. Wheeler, iun., chairman of directors of the Hartley and Riley Gold Dredging Company, has just returned from paying an official visit to the claim. He states that-the whole of the dredge, with the exception of the ladder, which requires straightening a little, is in first-class order, and looks as good as new. During the recent rise in the river the dredgemaster (Mr M'Lay) took advantage of the opportunity to relip all the buckets, take the engine entirely to pieces, and to thoroughly overhaul all the machinery. As stated, the ladder is a- little bent, but it will in no way affect the working of the dredge, which is now fit enough to go on for the next six months. Should the river rise again, however, Mr M'Lay purposes to put the ladder straight. The dredge started work on Sunday night, the 11th inst., and is taking a cut on the east side of the claim in a line parallel with the two cuts that she worked with such good results last year. Mr M'La\' considers that this cut will occupy the dredge during the whole of this summer and next winter before it is complete. At the end of these cuts there will then ba an area of the full width of the claim and 250 yards in depth between that point and the boundary of the Central Electric claim. If the Central Electric dredge gets gold when it starts near here, the richness of this portion of the Haitley claim will also be proved.
