AUCKLAND.

'A man named Daniel Tapley Moverley, aged 47 years, a waiter, went to a hotel to buy a pint of beer. He was served by the ■wife of the licensee, but as she brought the beer she noticed he had his hand to his ihead, and appeared very unwell. She went to bis assistance, and then sent for a, doctor, but Moverley expired before the medical man arrived. The cause of death is believed to have been heart disease. At the • annual conference of the Auckland Fruit-growers' Union, it was moved — "That the executive of the union be instructed to use every endeavour to get the Government to secure special legislation to encourage the manufacture and sale of gpure New Zealand grape wines, by either removing it from the operation of the Licensing Act, or by granting of special bottle licenses, open to any respectable wine manufacturer, cafe, or storekeeper, and the adding of a clause to the Licensing Act that, in the event of prohibition being carried, it will not extend to or include New Zealand wines." The motion met with full support, and was carried.
