" The "Floods at the Taieri.

TO TSE EDITOH. - -. ' Sißj-^Now that we: are" in the midst of a flood on the Taieri Plain, and communication has been suspended by rail and the main road between Mosgiel and .Outram, it perhaps will wake up the, sleeping members of the Taieri County Council to the necessity' of a,, full bridge across the Taieri River at Outram, instead' of a half bridge, which has existetd for so many years, much to the trouble and inconvenience of the residents and the travelling public._ I 'believe the lower part of the bridge leading into the bed of the river is seriously damaged, and perhaps it may be , better to study whether it would not be possible for the County Council to complete the other half of the bridge instead of laying out money on what may happen any time'we have extra water in the river. Being mail contractor for fout mails from Outram, it places me in such a position that it-is impossible for me to carry ,them out, and at the same time it leaves me liable'^to an exceptionally heavy fine, besides eausinor the residents in the four districts to be greatly inconvenienced. It is a well-known fact that money, has been spent on much less important works than the completing of this part- of a bridge. Hundreds of people have arrived at the edge of the\water near t*ie so-called bridge, and have been doomed to disappointment, and had to return ' ,from whence they came. Others have left their homes,, agd it.-will-be some tim<».befpre .they can return. Now,; all. this should tenJ to convince -the TaierrCounty councillor's that ' this -so-called- bridge is a danger- ar-- well .as a disgrace "to the Taieri, and they-as membersof that, body should- endeavour to study, the - best interests of- the ratepayers in'therdistrict ~ as well as the travelling~publie. Hoping that - others who can more ably handle the matter will do r so.— l am., etc., 4 T ' "- "William Collie, Mail Contractor. , : - North Taieri, November ,19. - - ~~ \' -_'
