WELLINGTON NOTES.
By Onlooker. ■ - \ • '. ,--'•■. November 17. Ihe -Wellington Racing Club stewards meton Friday last" and passed the programme of the-JLower Valley Jockey Club's 'meeting for - December 26 and- 27. "A good deal of surprise - has -been, expressed at the decision of the metropolitan xclub ,on 'rescinding a .previous resolution;" but* no reasons are given for it. It will be remembered that when the 'programme was*first submitted the Country club was notified ;fchat a one day's meeting would 'suffice. A deputation N ttfen = ,waited on the Colpiual Secretary' in the matter. It is a fact v that one of the stewards of the Lower Valley Jockey Club informed the president of the Wellington Racing Cub' that' two days were not" required, except by two business people in •iviartinboi'ough, and that the two day meetings only brought about a congregation of thieves arid -spielers A- r l'he^ decision of the metropolitan club in," the face of ihis is therefore all thi more remarkable. I asked Mr Lyon today if any reasons were given, and -he replied ''in. the negative. " .;The Mariborough Racing Club was fortunate enough to Ministerial, patronage for its postponed meeting, which came .off on [Wednesday and Thursday last. This was on account oi the, JtLons. vv ard, Carroll, and Mills being present at a banquet to the last-named ' hon. gentleman. ■ The late and present Colo-, nial, Secretaries must have been impressed ■with the differencev between the. two clubs — Canterbury and Blenheim. v The local horse Gorge was taken acrofes for seme reason or other, and lan second in a- field of two. On ,the second day Hotu filled the bill so as to save a walk over, but the bdme horse (Slaiden) .■won again. Hurdle races at -.the Blenheim (meetings iiave-been the same for some years, and ;the' sooner .they are" removed irom the programmes the better for the 'club, as at pre--isent/,backers have no', confidence in them. Of -ffche" horses". that crossed' the , straits, the/Blen-l!heirn-bred,-j but Taunermikau-trained, Sir Red.vers'- won Dhe .Maiden, tor v.hich he ,wae, welt -Ibacked. in town. "-He paid the good dividend 'of ' £5 -6s I 'and £2 13s. Sii -Redvers is by feiske (Wordenfeldt— My Idea) from Konini - Xdam of ,Coin). ". He was given ' a run the ;Eecond-,day at Carterton,"_but did not get> away and was never prominent. v Had he ,won there he would have been ineligible to ■ start "at Blenheim. Wajtutu, winner of the principal event, is a four-year : old, by Catesby — Waij full brother, to Plotter and Ca bailer. He .■was' bred" by" Torn Shannon &t Spring Creek, and could have ,been purchased as a'two-jrear- • old •from his breeder at a reasonable figure. Kent and Hotu dead heated for second place. Seabreeze, who won the Flying^ is the Sou'wester mare. She has been fairly successful on the "West Coast. Right Metal downed 'Hotu" and Kent in the i?lymg. Kaloo (who afcted as runner up to Fashion at the Hutt) again had to strike his colours to Six Redvers in "the "Welter, but' the latter was defeated by one of his own breed, Firetall. He was bred 'by" John Murphy, of Spring Creek, owner of •I'lske, from nis favourite mare Nora, who produced Louis, Tired, Yon Tempsky, and other •winners. On the second cay Jient made up foi " his previous " defeats, and scored twice. CEe .put down Right Metal and Sing Song in _ the .ttiverlands Handicap, and Hotif and Jbtight Metal in the Telegraph. Stage Whisper (St. Andrew — Whisper), won the Scurry, in which Sir Redvers ran third. Whisoer is full sister to "Gabble (dam of Jabber), and on that account visits St. Andrew again this season. Piretall scored again in the Welter from the Hutt mare -Czarina, who had earlier in the day run third in the Trial, and is still a maiden; and Breezy, winner of the Trial, is by Caloola II (¥ork — Magnolia), sire of Kaloo. - On arrival from Christchurch 'Mr Prosser took six of his team out to the Hutt and sent the 'balance 'home to Porirua.' "Mr W. E. Bidwill "(president of 'the Wairarapa. Racing Club) purchased a filly by Gipsy ißra-nd — Illusion at the ■ Eldei-slie stud. Mr T )C vE,aterson, -brother "to -R. W. Paterson^ (owner> of Dr Bill), "and A. Paterson (owner of Aider . de-Gamp), purchased a, colt by Stepniak—Britomart, ■who has \ joined J. -Lowe's "team at Ohe .Hutt.- ... " Mr Henry r Redwood, the father -of the' turf, iitarted two four-year-old colts by Catesby named Waitutu and Sanfoin at the Marlborough meeting. Sanfoin ran into a place ,iach day. He is from Fay, who won .the Mariborough Cup, in •' which race her Olaughter Peri was also successful. Mr RedIvood's colours, were last carried successfully ■by Awarua Rose in the last contest but one ,for the Mariborough Cup. Waitutu was bred Iby Mr Tom Shannon at Mr, .-Redwood's old at Spring Creek, and Sanfoin by .Mt P. Owen, a well-known Mariborough sportsItnan. The writer saw the two colts at Rabbit Haland in^the Nelson district, where they were drained" by Mr Redwood. They were to have taken part in the Nelson meeting last year, only- 6n the day the river was upland they ■.could not leave the island. , / Mr Tim O'Leary, a steward and clerk of the' Itcales to the Mariborough Racing ■ Club, also officiated as starter at the late 'meeting.
