DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY.
A meeting of .the Dunedin Presbytery was held on Monday afternoon in First Church. Hall, when the following membera were present—The Revs. R. R. M. Sutherland (pre* siding), W. Scorgie, I. Jolly, E. C. Tennent, R. Fairmaid, "A. 'Camerc-n, I. K. M'lntyre, J. "U. Spence, D. Dutton, D. Borrie, A. M* Finlayson (clerk)^ and Messrs A. Chisholm, T. Stark, W. Grant, D. Thomson, G. Reid, A.. Cameron.
The Rev. J. Standring, of Oamaru, was associated with the presbytery. The Rev: J. TJ. Spence, appointed with the Rev. Mr Sutherland to report on the application of the Mornington •Deacons' Court for a grant, said that they had visited the church, and all they could say was that the amount was far too small for the requirements of the case. However, that was a matter for the Deacons' Court. There could be no doubt that the condition of the Mornington Church was such as demanded speedy attention in the way of repairs. — The application was lef erred to the synod, along with a. similar applicationfrom North- East Valley, with a recommendation that they be granted.
In regard to the application by North-East Valley ior a grant, the Roy. Mr M'lntyre read the report requested by the Church Board as to de'i.'iilp of the proposed expenditure. 1 — It was decided to forward the report to the Church Board, with a request that they would report to the meeting of tho presbytery, to be held during the week.
The Rev. Mr Jolly reported in favour of the proposed site for a manse at Anderson's Bay, saying that it was an ideal site. — To be recommended to the synod for approval. The Rev. Mr Jolly, on behalf of the committee deputed to nominate the Standing Committees o£~tho pynod, read -the following names: — Church Extension Committee — • Re re. J. Gibb, VV. Scorgie, D. Duttoh, Mr W. Couston, and Mr John Reid; Missions Committee— Re V 3. R. R. M. Sutherland, W.Hewitson, J. U. Spence, Mr Geo. Reid, and Mr R. Glendining; State of Religion Committee — Revs. E. C. Tennent, J. M. M'Kerrow, I. Jolly, Captain Thomson, and Mr J.G. Sawell — On the motion of the Rev. Mr Borrie, the names of the Revs. Mr Gibb and! Mr Jb]]y,were transposed, and the nominations approved. — On the motion of the Rev. Mr. " Duttou, the Rev. "W. Scorgie .and Mr G. Reid? were appointed members of the Synod Committee on Bills.
The Rev. Mr SeorgicTsubmitled a draft of regulations prepared by the Rev. Mr Hewitt son, dealing with the question of supplying vacancies. — After a discussion, the regulations were remitted to the synod, with a recommendation that a large committee be appointed) to report on them.
An application was received from the Rev. Dr Nicholson (Itavensbourne) for admission to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church of Otago aiid Southland, and was discussed. — A motion — ■" That the application -be forwarded to the synod " — was met'by an amendment from the Rev. Mr Scorgie — " That the presbytery recommend the synod to decline the application." — A vote resulted in five hands being heirl up for the amendment and seven for the motion. — The motion Avas then carried. _An application, accompanied by credentials, was received from the Roy. "W. Simpson, of Victoria, for admission to the ministry of the church. — After a discussion, it was decided, on the motion of the Rev. Mr Cameron--" That, owing to the lateness with which , the application was received, that it be sent on to the synod simpliciter." Th#/Rev. Mr Borrie gave notice to move— « " That the motion passed at last meeting, stating that in the opinion of the presbytery there- was no power to allow the North-Easfc , Volley Church to mortgage the church, be rescinded." The presbytery then rose.
