LOCAL GOVERNMENT FOR THE MAORIS.
WELLINGTON, October 25. The Government have formed a Maori Lands Administration department, with Mr Sheridan, of the Native department, at its head.
Most of the new districts under the Maori Acts are now allocated. What is known as the Northern Maori District >ias, under the Maori Council Act, been divided into six districts. The Eastern Maori -District, from Tauranga to Wairarapa, has been split into seven districts, and the Western District SC far apportioned into five, but the King Country and Waikato boundaries are not yet definitely settled. The basis of population is approximately about 2000 for each district.
Under the Maori Lands Administration Act the East Coast from Cape Runaway down to Cape Palliser lias been divided into two districts ; the West Coast from Wellington to Upper Wanganui has been made one district. The district north of Wanganui to Onelrunga has not bean settled up to the present. The Northern Maori electorate, however, has been made one district, and it is considered probable that the Hot Lakes district, including Urewcra, will form a separate district. The boundaries under both acts will 'be gazetted shortly. j
