Promoted Through a Mistake.
The following amusing anecdote is related about the late Mi W. H. Smith. In his younger days he was usually present to see the morning papers despatched, and on a certain occasion an accident at one of the offices rendered it likely that that particular paper would miss the train. Throwing off his coai, Mr Smith -worked away with Mr subordinates, and had the satisfaction of getting them off just iv time. Shortly afterwards, while he was reading j a paper, still in his s>hirl-sleeves, a man, misj taking him for a fellow employee, accosted him. with : "Well, Jack, old man, we got that lot off smartly." tendering at the same time a resounding smack on the back. As soon as the man recognised his mistake he rushed away, terrified. But, to his delight, on returning to work ir the evening, ho found a note awaiting him, which contained not his dischaige, but promotion to the rank of a foreman. Mr Smith had recognised that an employee who took such an interest in his master's [ business was undoubtedly of the right sort.
