WANDERINGS,
When Evening masks the hills with grey* I gaze_ upon the restful scene, To nest X watch the sea-mews stiay, But soon they fade, and only seem; I think of thee. Then Morning's sun in grandeur lifts The shadows from the sleepy dell, But contemplating" on Her gifts * My spirit wanders from their spell, Dreaming of thee. I hear the laik, and, dreaming, lain Would think he sang to heaven's King; Soon, soon, I find the gladsome strain, That wakes the bush with rapture ring, Is sung to thee. Aurora, crowns with winsome shades The dimming splendour of the west; Bright Summer crowns September's glades, Yet all, at Memory's fond request, Crown t-iiee. To-morrow, with its blissful hope, Dear yesterday, with smile and sigh, To me their sacred poiials ope: To-day is all I wish— that I May live with thee. 3". M. Aldington, October, 1900.
