OTAGO CHESS CLUB v. OAMARU.
Played between Messrs J. Mouat and Banks. Boaud 5.
EVAN S GAMBIT.
The game was continued for about a dozen moves before Black res'gned. White could now win another piece by Q-B 7, but overlooked this and played Kt-Q Xt 3, unuecceasarily prolonging the game.
The following game was played in the Telegraphic match between the Otago Chess Club and the Oamaru Chess Club on the Saturdays of the 6th, 33th, and 20th October, 1900, Mr D. Forsyth playing for Otago and Mr E. T. Earl for Oamaru.
SCOTTISH GAME.
I Drawn. (Notes by Mr Forsyth.) (a) So far the game proceeds on book lines. (b) White might here have commenced a strong attack by the sacrifice of two pieces, as follows:— 11 KtxP, kxkt; 12BxKBP q b- x13QxP, k-kt3; 148-K3, k-r3; 16 Q-Q 3, p-qkt4V 16P-QR4, q-q b6 ; 17 Px P, kxp; and although the Black king is much exposed, it is difficult to discover how White can get compensation for his two pieces. Black might 'vary as follows : —12 q-k b3 ; 13 Bx P, qx b ■ 14 QxQ,k xq ; 15 Bx R, but Black has about an equivalent for his piece. (c) It is obvious that had White captured the kt he would have been mated in a few moves.
(d) White conducts the game well, — taking full advantage of his opportunity, secured at the expense of the gambit pawn, to retard Black's development.
(c) We consider this unneceessarily hazardous.
(f) Quite unexpected by Black, but played probably with the view of securing a draw. White might have continued : — 34 Q-Q Xt 5, <X-q 2 ; 35 Q x Xt, bx q ; 36 B-Q Xt s,— Black retaining the pawn with some chances of winning. (a) This only draws. 35 r-q b 1 or p-q r 3 or p-q b 5 would have retained some chances of winning, but probably the best reply would have been 35ktxr, after which would follow. — 36Q-Ktß, k-q2, 87QxR, and although White can give a number of checks, Black should escapfc with the superior garnet
