WELLINGTON, October 25.
For the quarter ended September 30, 105,3260z gold were entered for export, compared with 93,3950z during the corresponding period last year, the respective values being £405,785 and £361,384.
During tlie September quarter the customs duties collected in t-he colony totalled '£577,737, ' compared with £563,815 for the.' similar quarter of 1899. The excise duties amounted to £19,910, compared, with £18,592. During the September quarter the cus- . Toms duty collected on tea was £10,558,-, j compared with £20,117, collected during the same quarter last year. The vital statistics of Tokomaru, a small , settlement on the Manawatu Company's line, j for last year showed 60 births to one' death. j not" including one or two infants. This is claimed as a record in the Queen's dominions. A florist has succeeded in raising the first perfect white cactus dahlia in exi3tI ence, and has called the flower "Lord Roberts," after having obtained the sanction of the Commander-in-Chief from Pretoria, j The beautiful bloom, which was on view at l Hastings flower show, attracted very considerable attention.
