— The Albanian sheep dog, or more properly guard dog, is one of the most savage of his kind. He has been bred to regard every stranger as an enemy, and English naval officers who Tiave made shooting excursions on the Albanian coast frequently have had encounters with these dogs. Such visitors are officially warned that under no circumstances must they shoot a deg for fear of trouble with the Albanian shepherds (who x are not as gentle as him of Arcadia), but there is a saving clause in the dog laws of these hills which allows a man to stab the dog that attacks him, the idea obviously baing to prevent unnecessary destruction. The dogs appear to understand this, and it is said that the display ,of a spear or long hunting-knife is enough to keep them at bay. Tho report of a gun, on the other hand, is enough to bring every dog within hearing eithei with the purpose of joining the chase after wounded boar or of attacking the sportsman. These dogs are exceedingly courageous, and will' face any man or beast whom they may suppose to have designs on their masters' flock or other property. When the subject of the feiocity of these dogs was under discussion a few years ago somebody inquired whether Sam Slick's plan for dealing with a sava.ge dog had ever been tried. The American philosopher advised you to turn your back on the dog, bend down, and stare at him between your legs, the while advancing upon him backwards !
