At Birmingham, Mr Chamberlain's liome and constituency, the following message from the Colonial Secretary was displayed on a limelight screen, upon which the result of the various pollings are being shown : " Patriotism before politics. Speaking in the country, Mr ChamberSain declared that never had there been an issue of more vital importance to the future prosperity and existence of the nation before the electors than at the present election. The Conservatives have gained six home seats and the Liberal Unionists seven. All the latter are Imperialists. In constituencies where they have retained their seats, the Conservatives have secured greatly increased majorities, and in those which they have not won they have reduced the majority against them. This is noticeable in London, Manchester, and Salford.

In East Munche^ter the Right Hon._A. J. Balfour's majoritj^ was 2^!53 (last election it was 776). In Northeast Manchester the Right Hon. Sir J. Pergutson beat Mr Augustine Birrell by 706. In Manchester North Mr C. E. Schwann's (L) majority was reduced from 455 to 26. At Leicester the Government gain a seat, Mr H. Broadhurst (L) being re-elected, and Mi' J. F.

A deputation from South Africa to Great Britain has issued a stirring manifesto ±o the electors of Great Britain in which they state that the motherland alone is able to work out the burghers' salvation. Sir W. J. Lyne has informed the Tasmanian Premier that he has communicated with the several Premiers with reference to the proposed message to Mr Chamberlain congratulating him on the success of the war in South Africa, and insisting that the fruits of victory should be effectually secured to the nation, the majority being of opinion that the message was injudicious at the present time.

ADELAIDE, October 2

The Cabinet considered the Tasmanian Parliament's proposed message to Mr Chamberlain, and decided that, as it is an interference with British paity politics, such a message at this juncture is most imuolitic.
