The quarterly revenue returns include the following :—: — Customs £5.526,000, excise £9,073,000, and stamps £1,830,000. - Mr R. W. Allen, of Auckland, won the £150 open scholarship at Guy's Medical School.
October 2.
The London Bank of Australia will pay the instalments on deposits due in 1911 in January next. The Northern Investment Company of New Zealand^ show a profit of 6 per cent., and cairy forward £4894. Silver is quoted at 2s 5 5-16 d. October 4. The American visible Mipply of wheat is. estimated at 76,071,000 bushels. Dr Bickersteth, Bishop of Exeter, hns resigned his see on the grounds of illhealth.
October 5.
A wing of Welbeck Abbey, the seat of the Duke of Portland, was destroyed by fire. The pictures and furniture were saved
October 6.
The housekeeper of Y/elbeck Abbey was almost suffocated. She ' rescued the Duke of»Porlland's children with difficulty. The Duke and Duchess of Portland were ab&enfc in Caithness. The damage by fire is estimated at £25,000. Much silk tapestry was destroyed. The Shaw-Savill and Albion Company's directors have declared a dividend of 5 per cent.
Lord Hopetoun lias been elected vicepresident of the Navy League.
October 7,
Owing to the partial suspension of work the monthly earnings of the Lancashire operatives decreased by £40,000. The consumption of coal for September was 40,000 tons less than for the previous month.
October 8,
A sailor, recently arrived from Rosario, died of plague at Llandaff, whence he had travelled from Newcastle-on-Tyne. The Ashantis are everywhere dispersing. PARIS, October 7.
Henry Ferrette, a Radical and the antiSemitic deputy for Meu&e, and M. Martier, a recently-elected deputy, fought a duel. The latter was killed.
ROME, October 3.
Thieves forced a safe in the Vatican and stole £14,000 reserved for the maintenance of the Papal Palaces and decorations at St. Peter's.
ST. PETERSBURG, October 3. The new Naval Estimates show an increase of £1,000,000. NEW YORK, October 8.
The American anthracite coal strikers decline an advance of 10 per cent.- in wages, and per&ist in their other demands. The deadlock continues.
LIMA, October 2.
A riotous crowd here demanded the surrender of Senor Belaunde, ex-Minister of Finance in Peru, wishing to lynch him for the alleged embezzlement of £20,000. The military quelled t'ho riot, after wounding one hundred.
