A letter was received from a" well-known Wellington resident, stating that lit had witnessed -the incident for which Porleous was ordered off the field, and lie considered that Porteous had received greav provocation. The secretary was instructed to send to the City Council some siiggestions from, the committee as to the best means of improving the Oval so as to make it suitable for football and cricket.
WANGANUI DEFEATS TARANAKI. HAWERA, September 19. The match Wanganui v. Taranaki was played to-day, when, after an exciting game, the former won by 7 points to 5. Wanganui's score consisted of. a potted goal by Tregear and a penalty goal kicked by Takarangi; while A. Hunter scored a try for Taranaki, j which was converted by Hardgraves. The play, though fast, was not brilliant, and both teams were fairly evenly matched. Taranaki, though weaker than usual, had the best of the game in the first spell. Mynott got over in tlie second half, but the try was disallowed, to the great disgust of the crowd, 'who vented their feelings in Loots. Early in the second half Walsh e, a Taranaki man, was ordered off the field. A. Bayly, who had come" as a spectator, wa^ induced lo don the jersey again owing to tlie absence of several men who were picked.
