The August number of the Review of Reviews is yellow-clad, a& beseems its title, "The Revolt of the Yellow Man,"' and deals principally with the Chinese question in all its complications of war, intrigue, barbarism, and the menace to civilised Europe. The war in South Africa, however, in not foi gotten, and some pages are devoted to "Hide Lights on the Battlefield," v.hile the first of a series of selections from "W. A. Fitchett'.s "How England Saved Europe" is given under the title of "A Perished Navy." The caricatures of tho month, as might be expeeled,, are pruosome enough, with China and her teeming yellow millions for thoir topic. The Reviev, •- are, a& usual, happily and succintiv leviov.ed. The New Zealand Illustrated Magazine foi September 10 is a very bright, pleasant, and capable number. Tn addition vo several stories of fair magazine merit, it contains an article by Sir Robert Stout on "The Australian Colonies Tender the Commonwealth" ; s London letter, tho fhv l . of a series, by "Alien." "Mutton-birding in Stewari Island, ' and "Polyglot People," as well as several other interesting; papers. The illustrations are improving steadily, and art interestinginset, which all energetic people should make a point of reading, ib furnished by the list of prizes. — first piizo £100 — offered by the management to tho°e who obtain a certain number of subscribers to the magazine. A prize tale competition is also announced, and the magazine completes its fir^t year of struggle* a lie I—success,1 — success, upon which we heartily congratulate editor and management.
