NORTH OTAGO RACES. First Day — Wednesday, September 12. The heavy rain which fell last week caused the course to be heavy, especially along the back stretch, and therefore fast times were out of the question. Results • — FAIRFIELD HURDLE RACE. Of 40sovs; second horso ssovs. One mile and three-quarters. 67— Mr V. Harris's br g Skipper, by VictorMaggie, aged, 11.11 (Donovan) .. 1 47— Mr Wise's Ilex, 11.12 (Robertson) -. 2 27— Mr Godfrey's Pipi, 9.12 (A. Godfrey) .. 3 Also started: 10 Wild Lily, 9.9 (Telford).Pipi got the best of an even start, with Ilex and Wild Lily in close attendance, and Skipper last. At the second hurdle Wild Lily came to grief, leaving Pipi still in front, a length ahead of Ilex, who was three lengths ahead of Skipper. This position was not altered until reaching the entrance to the straight, when Skipper went to the front, and, going on, won by half a length from Ilex, with Pipi six lengths away third. The course, which was sown down in grass last year, was vory heavy, and this probably had something lo do with the bad showing of', some ot the competitors. Some very close finishes were fought out, e&pecially in the Hurdle Race, the President's Handicap, a-id both Trots. This was the result of a meeting of the stewards on the first clay, when they decided to give £5 to any person who could give information that would lead lo a conviction. After jumping the second hurdle Dundee still maintained the lead, and was going strong. When nearing the third jump Pipi, My Lord, and Wild Lily ran round. Mr Livingstone's gelding came back to his field after traversing a naile, while Ilex went to the front, and Skipper raced into second position. When nearing "the last jump Skipper got up alongside Ilex, and a great finish was fought out, the latter winning by a length, Dundee being eight lengths away third. Time, 3min 12&ec.
