September 10. — With the exception of occasional frosts and brief cold snaps the weathtr continues splendid, and grain sowing is proceeding briskly. Lambs are making their appearance, and there is every indication of vii abundance of early feed. Borough Council — Messrs D. Maiip'j and P. M'Cann were returned unopposed on Tuesday latii for East and Middle Wards respectively, and the sitting member (Mr R. A. Rodgur) and Mr Thomas Crawford contest the seat lor Webt Ward. The poll will be taken on Thursday.

Faimers Club. — At a meeting of the Farmers' Club on Saturday the date of the annual horse parade was fixed for Saturday, October 6. The annual meeting of the club will be held on the same date. Financially the ciub has had a successful year, and after electing a new grandstand on the show ground and paying all working exx^enses will start the new" year with a credit balance of about £10.

Fancy Dress Ball.— After a most successful season, the Tapamu Quadrille Assembly brcughfc their gatherings to a close on Friday evening last with a plain and fancy dress ball. Most elaborate arrangements had been made for the occasion, and everything that tended to make dancing enjoyable was earned out The Athenteum Hall has very seldom presented such a festive appearance as it did on Friday, night, the decorations consisting of evergreens, bunting, and Chinese lanterns. The floor waa in splendid order, and the music and supper excellent, so that things went merrily till 4 o'clock on Saturday morning. The energeticsecretary (Mr J. Grant) and the committee have every reason to_be satisfied with their efforts to make the dance a success. Messrs xl. juodger and T. E. Woolliams- acted as M.C.'s. .Inspiriting music was supplied by Miss Rund.e (piano), and Messrs Rundle (piccolo) an 3 Fred. Cullen (violin), and this combination would be hard to beat. Mrs T3raudigam is to be complimented on the quality of the rerreshnients piovided, and the individual tastes of nil were catered for in the way of liquid refreshment. The Grand March, in which aboiit 40 couples took part, was led off by ,Mr H. Rodger (as "Pirate King") and Miss Kodger-(" 'Vanity, Fair"), and was witnessed by a large numbei' of people from the stage. Besides the costumes enumerated, there were a number of ladies and gentlemen in ordinary evening diess. One or two of the costumes created great amusement, btvt they all had a most picturesque appearance, and a few of the ladies' attires showed exquisite taste.
