WEST PORT AND THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

WESTPORT, September 10. At a largely-attended meeting of the public in the Town Hall to-night the mayor (Mr Scanlon) presiding, the following resolutions were unanimously carried : — " That it is desirable Westport should be connected by railway with the main line of railways in the Middle Island, in order to develop the mineral products and open up land for settlement in the Buller district, and thus create a shipping trade at this port, the harbour of which is now capable of accommodating and loading vessels of a size sufficient to ensure a larg.e fiolfliual

and foreign trade ; (2) that, as an initial step towards obtaining the construction of this railway, the Government be asked to have a survey made of a practical route from We&tporl to Eeefton ; (3) that the foregoing resolutions be forwarded by his Worship the Mayor to the Premier, the Minister of Public Works, and the members for Buller and Motueka ; (4) that the inhabitants of Inangahua County be asked to assist in the furtherance of the object referred to in the two first resolutions ; and, with this purpose in view, the chairman of the Inangahua County Council be written to asking him to assist in the manner indicated, and that a chamber of commerce for We&tport be formed."
