SOUTHLAND

Mr Andrew Dunlop, a county councillor and chairman of the county, died suddenly from apoplexy oa Sunday afternoon. He had resided 37 years in Southland.

After a hearing extending over 10 clays three Orepuki miner,? were acquitted by the magistrate on a, charge of perjury alleged to have been committed in the Warden's Court. The dispute was about fluming. and the accused had produced a section of the box and sworn that it was the size of the flume. It appeared tli£>t the flume had broken away, and we* rebuilt with .old materials, but much smaller. The prosecution was a private one, and the whole question turned on dates. The costs to both parties will be heavy.
