AUCKLAND
The Auckland Cycle Koads League unanimously passed a resolution to-night approving of the principle of compulsory taxation of cyclists to provide means for constructing cycle paths, the idea of raising money by voluntary subscription being considered un&atisfactorj-. It ft a^, also resolved to ask the Premier to make the Cycle Roach Bill a Government measure, or, in the alternative, to give the member in charge of the bill facilities ior bringing it before" the House this session. Rather a sensational case was hee.rd at Auckland on the slh irjst. Herbert Mann was charged with assaulting Harry Holland with intent to do him actual bodily harm. From the evidence it appeared thai Holland had been m the habit of walking out \ ith Mann's siscer. Mann objected to this, and had remonstrated with Holland and threatened to thrash him. Tie also mentioned the matter to Holland's father, who, -when Mann mentioned the thrashing, said his son deserved a ihrr.-hmg. One evening Holland and Mann's sister were at an entertainment together, and when Holland left the door of the Northern Club, where -the girl Mann was a servant, accused ran after him. Holland was subsequently taken to the hospital in Cj semi-conscious state, but his injuries were slight. Mann was committed for trial, bail being granted in two sureties of £200 each. A largely attended meeting of merchants and others on Thursday resolved to urge upon Parliament the strong claims of the district north of Auckland to be opened up by an extension of the railway system, and to request the Government \o give an assurance thai they will be prepared as far as practicable to expend on the construction of the North of Auckland railway at least £100,000 during the present financial year. A proposal thai Auckland should undertake to raise half, the "amount on Government debentures at 3J, per cent, was defeated.
