CANTERBURY v. OAMARU.
(From the Press).
The match by telegraph between these clubs was concluded on Saturday evening, and although the games were not all finished, the Canterbury Club is pretty well assured of victoiy they having won six against two. Of the ii 'o unfinished games one, or perhaps two, will be given to Oaniftru. whilst the other three will picbataly be given rs diaws. For a small club Oamaru has plajed up remarkably well, and their victory at Board 1 was gained by a fine pieco of chess stia.tegy. The unfinished games are to be sent to Mr R. A. Cleland, of Dueedin, for adjudication.
At Board 1, the Oamaru skipper imprt,<-cd an already strong attack, and on the 39th move he prettily sacri-Aed a Bishop. This gave him a forced win m a few moves, and Andersen le-sigr-ecl. At Boaid 2 the Oamaru player improved his game by getting a strong pawn centre, but Mr Wood forced some judicious exchanges and left the game apparently even.

At Board 5 Mr Hardcastle was subjected to a fierce attack, but the Oamaru man failed to make the most of his chances, and there was little to choose between the two positions when play was adjourned.
At Board 6 Mr Scott was a pawn down, and eventually lost another. The Southern player increased his advantage, and the game is almost ceitain to be given in his favour.
The game bstween Mr Smith syid Dr Garland at Board 7 was sent for adjudication after the second night's day. At Board 8 the Oamaiu player's sealed move was a weak oiip, and Mr Milner took immediate advantage of it, and forced a win. The Oamaru player at Board 9 scored a win on the second night.
Ad Board 10 Mr H. Kennedy impioved his piece advantage, and effected a pretty mate on the sith move.
