THE LAST OF LUPUS,
The poor brute met with a fearful death
last week, being one of eight horses that were burnt in the Gore fire. Lupus was bred by Mr S. G. Inder in 1888, got by Le Loup from the Cassivelaunus mare Winifred. Lobo came of the Fame breeding two years later. Lupucs won the very first race in which he started — the Maiden Plate at Maniototo in November of 1891, when he paid £8 Is, the public going for Yerepie and Dainty, neither of whom was placed. The form was confirmed six weeks later, as Lupus won the Cromwell Derby by throe lengths from Dun Joseph, while Dainty and Verepic finished behind Huia.. In these races he was ridden by Taggart. The rest of the season was wasted by Lupus. He did no goad. As a four-year-old, however, he paid his way. Leading" off by beating De Trop a head in tho Maniototo Members' Handicap, he failed at Ida Valley, but won the Vincent J.C. Handicap in a canter, jsaying £12 4s, and followed this up with a win in the Lauder Handicap. Then, in February, he pulled off three events at Maniototo, the last of these being the President's Handicap, in which he carried 10-6, and won easily from Le Roi II 8.5 and Trixi6 7.2. On the strength of that form Mr Inder sent Lupus down to Dunedin for Tempest's Cup meeting, but the Naseby horse's first venture on the metropolitan course wag not
at ali encouraging, since i>e got beaten out of a place in each of his three laces. In his five-year-old season Lupiis carried big weights., and won at Maniototo, Cromwell, and Vincent; then, in April, journeyed to South Canterbury — his first c-xouroion out of Otago— and, ridden by Johnny Loughlin, won the "Washdyke Welter from Victim and Whccftler, paying 54 9,, and doing ihe mile, with 9.1 ur>, in Imin 45isec. A week later Lupin ran his fhvl race over hurdles. This was at Oamaru, in the race won by Empire. Young rode him. The next day the owner himself took the mount, and, while Invader won, Lupus beat the others. Men who follow racing kept their eyes on Lupus after that, and he only paid £3 13s when, ridden by Jim Cotton, he won his fiist hurdle race (and his first race of any sort at the Forbury), this being the Tally-ho Handicap at Prime Warden's Gtago Cup meeting. In February Mr Inder' & horse had another turn on the fame course, getting home, with 10.13 up. Fox in the saddle, 'by a length from Minerva 10.2, and paying £2 15s. The next season Lupus won nothing but a little race at Winton, and his last appearance in public was at Dunedin in the spring of 1596, when he finished out of a place in the race won by his erratic 3'ounger brother Lobo. It may be taken, I suppose, that Lupus pretty well paid his way, but if he did it was about a& much as he did.
