"The Waiwera (from ."Wellington, July 7) arrived in London on Friday morning. The Waimaie, which left Gravesend on August 4 for Port Chalmers, parsed tho Gape on Augu=t 30. AUCKLAND, August 30.— Sailed : Star ot Australia, for London. LYTTELTQN, Septembei I.— Sailed : Pake 1 ., a, for London, via Teueriffe. ADELAIDE, Sepiember 2.— Arrived : Perthshire, from London. -LONDON, August 28.— Arrived: Paparca, from Wellington. LONDON, August 31.— Arrived : Waiwera, from Wellington.
INYEROAR.GILL, Sepiember I.— Mr Napier Bell has submitted a report to the Bluff Harbour Board on proposed wharf extension on '? large scale. The scheme includes: Dredging £10,000, new wharves £49,500, ■widening present wharf £10.500, railway approach \o new wharf £422; total cost o£ works £91,562. The trade of the port last year totalled £258,700 import* and £750,000 exports. It was stated that the board were now in a position to undertake large cx'penditure, and it is probable that the work will be got under way at once.
The following vessels have been in harbour during the past week: — Arrivals: Hinemoa, s.s., 286 tons; Corinna, s.s., 820 tons; Mapourika, s.s., 1203 tons; Janet Nicoll. s.s., 4-96 tons; Flora, s.s., 838 tons: Gresham, b.s., 388 tons; total, 4031 tons. Departures: Talune. s.s., 1370 tons; Monowai, s.s., 2513 tons ; Invercargill, s.s., 123 tons ; Herald. s.s., 356 tons; Hinemoa. s.s., 286 tons: Jtimu,. s.s.,- 143 tons; Corinna, s.s., 620 tons; Janet Nicoll, s.s., 496 tons; Flora, s.s., 838 tons; Gresham, 388 tons; total, 7333 tons.
The number of vessels of all classes which j .have arrived at the port of Otago during the period commencing" December 17. 1f 99, and ending August 27, 1900, has been 322, with r.total of 502,919 tons gross. The departures during the same period were 314 vessels, representing a total of 492,599 tons gross. The steamship Deutschland, of the Ham- . "burg- American line, made hei first trip . tc> America in June, and was expected and guaranteed to be the fastest steamship afloat oil the Atlantic line. She will steam 23 knots, which is equivalent io about 26£ miles an hour, and her maintaining that speed means that she will easily beat the record of the North German Lloyd steamer Kaiser "Wilhelm der Groa?e, which baa to its j credit a maximum of 22.63 knots, or a veiy wnall fraction of over 26 miles an hour. !
