MONTE CARLO.
A very funny thing happened last week. I was asked by a friend whether 1 would oblige a mutual acquaintance with a list of Monte Carlo's performances. 1 promi°ed to do so, knowing nothing of the reason why they were wanted, but gueesing that some use was lo be made of the record to show the merits of the Lincoln Yet blood on the trotting track. To my surprise when the Witness appeared it contained ail advertisement with my compilation of Monte Carlo the trotter's performances tacked on to an advertisement announcing the other Monte Carlo-— the thoroughbred — a= at the service^ of breeders in the Stratlx-Taiei-i district. This h a good joke, for the trotter is a gelding. T have no objection to carry the joke a step further by giving the troltei the benefit ol all the information I had prepared, and stating that his nine wins at two miles show an average gait of about smin 32? Ec, and the six wins at a mile give an average of about 2min 30 2-2fac. This is great liavolling. Having done so nine 1 ), 3 must drop the Irottei and give a line to the galloping Monte Carlo. He was bred in 1889 by Mr D. Fraser, got by Ascot (*ii'e of Norton) out of Speculation (dam of Ngatuere), by Hiupocampus — Slander, by C'amden — Annie Laurie, by Cap-a-pie. As a three-year-old this Monte Carle won the Trial Handicap at Hawke's Bay Spring, beating King George and Zaccho, and also the Open Handicap at Marton in April, giving weight and a beating to Mutinj- at a mile and a-quar-tcr. Next season he beat a fairly good field in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui, and next day pulled off the Owen Stakes, giving weight to Daisy Clipper and four others. At Feilding he ran second to Musket in the chief event and won the Manchester Handicap, a mile and a-quartei. After running three seconds at Manawatu he went to Rangitikei and won the Cup, carrying 7.13, and beating Rangipuhi 9.3, the mile and three-quarters taking 3min lOsec. He was also second to
Cordelia in the Winter Oats Handicap at Wanganui. As a five-year-old Monte Carlo won the Consolation at Wanganui Spring, the Grand Stand Handicap at Rangitikei, ran a dead heat with Rangipuhi in the Greatford Stakes at the same meeting, and then won the Egmont Cup, twe miles, 7.7, beating Reynard 1A and Rosefeldt 8.11 for places. Waiuku 7.4- was one of the unplaced division. Then, going on to Taranaki, he won the Jockey Club Handicap, a mile and a-half, with 7.10, beating Jri«h Twist 8.7, The Dancer 8.7, Bsn Godfrey 7.13, Waiuku 7.9, and Prioress 7.7. These are amongst Monte Carlo's best performances, and they will stand analysis.
