HANDICAPPERS, WRITE PLAINLY.
A rather singular case of protest occupied the attention of the Marong Jockey Club, Victoria, recently. The owner of Starlight obiected to Thistle being declared winner of the Hurdle Race, on the ground that he had nob run under the weight allotted. by the handicapper. Tt was asserted that, while the weight in the programme was lOst 121b, the handicap apportioned by Mr Morecroft was list 121b. The stewards thought that, as Mr Morecroft had furnished the weights to the spcretary as they appeared in the programme, the protest was frivolous. They therefore decided to disallow the protest, and returned the deposit. Prior to the race Mr Morecroft stiteel that his intention was to allot the sou of Wycombe — May list 121b. His manuscript copy, as forwarded to the secretary, was blotched as if the figures had bean originally lOsl 121b. and the 0 subsequently altered to 1, indicating tho higher weight. The owner of the second horse has fyiven notice of his intention to appeal to the V.R.C.
