SALE OF PUREBRED HIGHLAND CATTLE.
Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows: — At Burnside saleyards on Wednesday we •offered the first consignment of purebred Highland cattle ever submitted to public competition in the colony. The consignment was from Mr G-. H. Rhodes, of Claremont, Timaru, and consisted of four cows in calf, one eight months' old heifer, and one steer of same age. The cattle were true to type, and were eagerly com- . peted for by the very large concourse of buyers present. Highly satisfactory prices were obtained, the cows making from £9 to £15, the . Tieifer £11, and the steer £5. The following is a description of the cattle, their breeding, the ' prices obtained for each, and the names of the ' respective purchasers : — & Vanachaxt. — Dun .cow, calved March 18, 1891; bred by Mr G. Highland Maggie. — Yellow or light red cow, calved January 29, 1596; bred by Mr G. H. Jessie. — A light red cow, calved December 21, 1897 ; bred by Mr G. H. Messrs A. Moritzson and Co., Tyne street, " Srsport for week ending August 29: — Wheat remains as when last quoted — viz., Tusca-n, 2s 3d, velvet, and red chaff 2s 2d to 2s • 2*cl. Barley. — Prime samples still meet with good - demand at 2s Id, medium quality being hard to place at Is 8d to Is lOd. Oats have a good inquiry at Is 8d for milling, Is 7ftcl for duns, and Is 6Jd to Is 7d for ' Danish. Potatoes have collapsed, and are hard to place at country sidings.
The above quotations are all delivered st store, Oamaru, sacks 6d each, except where otherwise mentioned. CLEARING- SALE AT WYJSTBHAM. The National Mortgage and Agency Company report as follows: — We held a most successful clearing sale at Mr Peter Earron's farm in the Mr Peter Barron's farm, "Auntine," in the "Wyndham Valley, when a large number of settlers weie pie?ent Mr Bajron having sold his farm, everything had to be sod to the highest bidder. We must add that the condition of everything about the place did great credit to Mr Barron, and it is very seldom cie comes m contact with stock, ancl indeed cveiythmg, that is kept in such good order. Bidding in all cases was very spirited, and eveiything brought good values.
