BLACKWATER.
July 26.— Blackwater, a small mining township, is situated some four miles up the Blackwater Creek, and about 10 miles from Totara. Flat. Alluvial mining has been carried on at this place both by Europeans and Chinese for a considerable number of years, and great quantities of gold have been taken from the locality. At present the -Blackwater township is not a very-striking place. A good many huts ana cottages are tc be seen about the old workings, many of which art occupied by Chinamen. There i nc hotel oi accommodation house at this place. There are two stores, one run by a European and the other by a Chinaman. The latter appears to be carrying- on an extensive business among his own countrymen, most of whom, I am informed, aie doing fairly well. Several dredging claims have been taken up along the Blackwater Creek.but so far nothing has been done to develop the properties, which, judging by the numerous creeks and hJIs that havo been worked all around, I should inline will prove valuable properties. Taki- •- "the Black-water all through it has every ar>peais:>re. of being a go-ahead place.
