EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 30lh June, which have been compiled by the secretary to the Education Board, show that there were 221 schools in operation in the district, employing 204 male and 274 female teachers, beside 12 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 20,259, at the end of Ihe quarter 20.390, comprising 10,428 boys, and 9962 girls. The strict average attendance was 9061 boys, and 8563 girls, malaing a total of 17,624, being 164 less than the total for the previous quarter, and :310 .less than that for the Jun& quarter of IPS 9. The working average was 101 more than tli© strict average — viz., 17,725, being 154 less than, the total for the previous quarter, and 307j less than that for the corresponding quarter, of 1899. The averages at; the city and suburban schools were: — George street 719, ]£aikorai 664, High street 592, Normal 560, Arthur street 554, Union street 544, Albany street 535, Forbury 514, Caversham 495, Mornington. 452, Port Chalmers 436, North-East "Valley, 407, Macandrew road 389, Kensington 311, Ravensbourne 200, Anderson's Bay 106, St.. Clair 96, Wakari 72. The attendances at Oamaru were : —South School 369, North 329, • Middle 274. At the district high schools: — Lawrence 255, Tokoniairiro 233, Palmerstoa 223, Balolufchfl 219 4
