EDITOR'S WALLET.
Managing 1 Mother. Scene : A girls' boudoir, cosily and tastefully arranged: Ethel, aged 19. Blanche, aged 21. Tho two are sitting in tea-gowns and bewitching attitudes warming their toes before going to bed.
Ethel : What did you think of Cousin Violet's costtune to-day. Rather outre, wasn't it?
Blanche : Yes, poor thing. With her clothes-bag figure, she never can carry off airything at all dressy. Ethel-(looking complacently at her own jimp little person) : It's a pity that those who have the figures to carry off expensive clothes never' have the money to buy them. Blanche (doubtfully) : M'yes. All the same, I mean to have a rig-out exactly like Cousin "Violet's next week.
Ethel (scornfully) : And where are you going to get it from? Blanche (quietly) : Out of the mater, of course. Ethel : That's no go. She'll cay we've had too many new gowns already lliib winter. Blanche: All the same, I mean to get it. Ethel : Very well. But I shall ask for the same thing, you may be sure. (The same scene next evening.) Ethel (peevishly) : \V ell, I knew it was no good asking the mater ; she said exactly what 1 expected. Blanche (smiling) : So she did to me, only I got what I wanted all the same. Ethel (eagerly) : You witch! How? _ Blanche : A little diplomacy, that's all. ' I told her that Sir 'Wilfred Enderby had admired Violet's gown, and had remarked how well it would look upon my willowy figure. Ethel (shocked) : Oh, Blanche, what an awful tarradiddle !
Blanche: Well. I'm sure he thought so, and I have no doubt he would have said- it if he had dared.
Ethel (regretfully) : I wish I had thought of putting it in that way. Blanche (sententiously) : My dear child, when you are as old as I am you will realise that mothers require a great deal of careful management.
