MASSACRE OF LEGATIONS.
Surpassing sacrilege of all the ages, Black miracle ot horror and aii'right, Land of dense darkness, where the heathen
rages, Nations arise to crush thee in their might; Though for a moment dulled by deadly chill, The heart of all the world stands still. But for a moment; in its silent beating
Lies the fierce passion of an awful stroke, When pent-up forces, in their mighty meeting, Shall rush thy citadel and break thy yoke — Open to daylight all the groaning earth, That Law and Liberty may come to birth. Oh, martyrs valiant! Martyrdom more glorious Was never witnessed by the lolling spheres; Most noble company! and still victorious, By virtue of your blood and our poor tears: Spirits that leapt to God in one sharp breath, Finding their victory and speech in death. —JOYCE JOCELYN.
