ROSLYN BOWLING CLUB,

The seventeenth annual general meeting of this club was held in the Borough Council Chambers, Roslyn, on Monday evening, 15 members being present, Mr B. Throp presiding.

The Secretary (Mr Arthur Clothier) read the following report: —

The committee have mucli pleasure in presenting to the members the seventeenth, annual report. Play throughout the season has been seriously interfered with by broken weather, but on the whole the club has been successful iv its mashes — winning five out of the Association games played,' , and losing two only — namely, -those against Kaituna and Taieri. The evenness of the play may be judged from the fact that 27 rinks in all weie played, of which the club won 13, and lost 13, one rink tieiug. The total points scored were 509 by the Roslyn Club against 475 by their opponents. Prizes presented by the president and the vicepresident were keenly competed for, Mr R. H. Scott winning the president's, Mr W. C. Allnutt the president's special prize, and Mr J. Scoular the prize presented by the vice-president for members who had never won a piize. Twelve pairs entered for the " pairs " match, which was won after some close games by Messrs Balk and Scoular. The committee regret to say that during the season several members have severed their connection with the club, amongst others Mr Peter Duncan, to whom the best thanks of the 'club are due for many services rendered by him in the past. The membership now stands at 43, but it is hoped that, bearing in mind the great increase in the population of the district, a little exertion on the part of the members will bring a considerable accession of new players to our ranks.

The committee cannon speak too highly of the care and attention bestowed upon the green during the season by Mr Dobb, it being in better order and condition for play than for some years past. The special thanks of the club are due to Mr Dobb for his services.

The annual tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was Jield in Dunedin in January last. Three teams entered from this club, but were not successful in carrying off any of the honours of the meeting. During the winter months a series of social meetings were held in the Roslyn Institute, and were much, enjoyed by those enthusiasts who attended. No doubt they would have been better supported had it not unfortunately happened that every night of meeting, without exception, turned out wet, in some instances very wet. A very enjoyable crib and eu'ehre tournament was played against the Kaituna Club, who, however, proved themselves invincible on the green cloth as they did later in the season upon. the bowling green.

Reviewing the position of "the club, in moving the adoption of the report, the President congratulated the meeting upon the successful year they had passed, having lost only two matches out of seven placed, this record being^, he considered, exceptionally good, considering the very small membership of the club. He was sorry that they did not make more progress in membership. They certainly ought to do so, seeing that of recent years a large number of new residents had come to the district. He felt quite sure that if these new residents only knew the enjoyment that was to be got from bowling there would soon be a stronger membership. The difficulty appeared to be in getting them to understand what they were losing. Mr Bolam" seconded the adoption of the report, and the motion was carried.

In the course of discussion reference was made to the difficulty of getting members to attend country matches, and on the suggestion of the president it was resolved that the newly-elected committee be asked to arrange that earlier notice of country matches be made to_ members, so that those unable to attend might have an opportunity of obtaining a substitute.

Prizes were presented by the Presidnt as follows: — President's prize, Mr R. H. S,cott; vice-president's prize, Mr Scoular/ the Doubles prize, Mr Balk; president's special prize (inlaid round table, made by Mr Dobb, the greenkeeper), Mr Allnutt. The election of officers resulted in the following gentlemen being appointed: — President, Mr E. M. Roach; vice-president, Mr A. Matheson; treasurer, Mr O. Balk; secretary, Mr A. Clothier ; committee— Messrs R. Crawford, D. Scott, J. B. Callan, W. Wilson, J. Scoular; auditors, Messrs R. T. Wiieeler and R. H. Scott; delegates to association, Messrs E. M. Roach-and A. Clothier.

The treasurer's report, which was adopted, showed that there was a credit balance of £7 2s Bd, or £5 11s 2d, if certain liabilities were paid. .

Mr P. Duncan was elected an honorary life member of the club.

It was reported that during the past year 1899-00 the following five matches had been won — viz. : Dunedin, St. Clair, Green Island, Port Chalmers, and Caledonian.

A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers.
