The batting of tha Lancashire captain dwarfed everything else in. the match between that county and Hampshire on May 31, Lancashire winning by 176 runs. In the first innings Lancashire made 411 (Ward 83, O. R. Hartley 82, A: C. MacLaren 79, A. Eccles 4C, Cutle]l 44, Briggs 32), and Hampshire 251 (J. Newton 59, E. M. Sprot 34. A. J. L. Hill 30). In the second innings Lancashire 'declared" with four wickets down for 203 (A. C. MacLaren not out 102, A. Eccles 35) and Hants scored 187 (E. M. Sprot 80, A. J. L. Hill 55).

Yorkshire defeated Middlesex at Lord's by pix wickets." The metropolitan team made 202 (H. B. Hayman 87, R. W. Nieh'olls 44) and 202 (T. Tindall 62, Trott 37), and the Tykes compiled 307 (Brown 96, Tunnicliffe 79, Haigh 35, Denton 30) and 9j3 for four wickets (Denton 30).

Surrey defeated Gloucestershire at the Oval by eight wickets. Gloucestershire batted first and made 212 (G. L. Jessop 87, Wrathall 62), and on the morning of the third day. little play having been secured on the second day, Surrey's first innings was closed with eight wickets down for 354 (Abel 104, Hay-" ward 92, Lees 41, D. L. A. Jeplison not out 34). Gloucestershire mads 166 (S. De Winton 42, Board 37, C. L. Townsend 35) in the second innings, and Surrey lost two wickets in obtaining the number requisite to win.

Burnup was the feature of the play in the match between* Lancashire and Kent at Old Trafford,, but the cricket was generally delightful, and neitheiside secured the advantage. Kent opened with the good score of 420 (C. J. Burnup 200, T. N. Perkins 88, J. R. Mason 68), and Lancashire scored 309 (Ward 91, Briggs 51, A. Eccles 31). The second innings of Kent was closed with seven wickets aown for 210 (J. R. Mason 70, R. D. Bannon 61, C. J. Burnup 36), but there was no chance of finishing tlie match, and Lancashire actually made 200 for the loss of only two wickets (Tyldesley not out 70, Briggs not out 58, A. C. MacLaren 52). cestershire was won by the former on June 6by 10 wickets. Scores: Warwickshire, 312 (W. G. Quaife not out 83, Diver 44, Kinneir 32) and 28 fdr no wickets; Worcestershire, 112 (Bowley 43) and 225 (Wheldon 56, H. K. Foster 50, Arnold 31) . * - Derbyshire defeated Hampshire at Southampton by 177 runs, scoring 338 (Bagshaw 96, Chatterton 50, S. H. Evershed 46, L. G. Wright 40) and 175 (S. H. Evershed 62, A. E. Lawton 37) to the home team:} 134 (C." Robson. 42, Rev. G. B. Raikes 41) and 202 (Webb 64, G. B= Raikes 49).

A match between Leicestershire and Essex at Leyton was won by the latter by an innings and 58 runs. The visitors made 237" (Whitehead 103, King 51, 0. J. B. Wood 33) and 153 Coe not out 61). Essex, whose innings was closed with eight wickets, down,' scored .453, C M'Gahey subscribing 184, Carpenter 66, H. G. Owen 62, A. P. Lucas 54, and Reeves 31 (not out). Young took six wickets for 76 runs, in Leicestershire's first innings, and C. J: Kortright six for 77 in the second. The match between Surrey and Notts afc Trent Bridge was for Arthur Shrewsbury's benefit. Surrey won a keenly-contested struggle by fotir wickets. Notts made 203 (G-. J. Groves 39, W. Gunn 33) and 298 (A. O. Jones 56, J. Gunn not out 47, J. A. Dixon. 47, Dench 36), while Surrey scored 246 (D. L. A. 'Jephsoh 63, Abel 46) and 262 for six wickets (Lockwood 74, Broekwell 51, Hollandnot out 49).

. There was very high scoring in the match at Brighton between Sussex and Gloucestershire, 1310 runs being made for the loes of 30 wickets. Sussex put together 391 (K. S. Ranjiteinhji 97, Killick 94,-Marlow not out 83) and 423 (K. S. Ranjitsinhji 127, A. Collins 102, C. B. Fry 41), while Gloucestershire compiled 496 (G. L. Jessop 179, W. S. A. Brown 89, WrathaJl 75, Board 55, W. M'G. Hemingway 37).
