FAST TRACKS.
"We have .some fairly fast tracks in Australia, wiites " Lfrnpire," but nothing to equal Epsom (England), and some of the times made there at the recent summer meeting gave the American records a shaking, more especially in connection with the sprint events. Diamond Jubilee took 2vnin 42sec to win the Derby, but in winning the Craven States Jubert cut out the mile in Imin 37 2-ssee, while in the Woodcote Stakes the crack two-year-old Toddington easily ran six furlongs m Imin 13sec. That was pretty smart ' travelling, but in the Royal Stakes Deiudonne, with 8.7, easily put that time in the shade by getting over ths same distance in Imin 9 3-ssec. In the Egmont Plate "Wild Irishman was responsible for five furlongs in 57 3-ssec. first glance these times may appear ridiculous, but some parts of the track are "very much downhill, and, according to a well-known Australian jockey, who has ridden on it, the drop rounding TatLenham Corner is so great that the horses don't gallop there, they simply slide down. This, of course, is his little joke, but it gives a fair idea of what the gradient is like, and at the same» time accounts for the fast times.
