THURSDAY, JULY 26.
In the Legislative Council on Thursday a Secret Defence Committee was set up to cooperate with the committee appointed by the other Chamber. The Education Board Election Bill was read a second time.
In the House of Representatives on Thursday, after some discussion 1 on the appointment made to the Hansard staff, the Gisborne Harbour Board and Thames Borough Endowment Bills were passed. The Auckland Electric Lighting, Wellington City Betterment, and Wellington Corporation Land Exchange Bills were read a second time. The evening sitting was mainly devoted to a discussion on the law of libel and the press of Nev7 Zealand, the measure tinder discussion being Mr Camcross's Law of Libel Bill. The bill was throw.n out by a majority of three votes. The Premier not only opposed the bill, but intimated that he intended to withdraw the copyright at present given to cablegrams, a privilege which at present enables morning and evening papers to combine to obtain' a more satisfactory service than either cIaES could otherwise hope for.
