THE BUBONIC PLAGUE.
IinFECTED HATS IN WELLINGTON. ' WELLINGTON, July 24.
Mr Gilruth has reported to the Colonial Secretary the presence of plague amongst rats in Wellington. A dead rat, which •was found outside a warehouse in Featherston street, showed, on post-mortem examination, all the characteristics of plpjgue to the naked eye and under the microscope. It was evidently a more virulent form of plague than that found ainongsti the Wanganui and Aromoho rats, judging by its effect upon guinea -pigs.
A very large demand exists for Crown land in the Auckland province just now. The Star learns that in February next a big area is to be thrown open in the King Country-on the other side of Kawhia. This land is said to be of splendid quality.
