Criticism PROBLEM 1988.

Position : Black on 2, 4, 14, 16, 22 ; White on > 9, 21, 23, 24, 29. Black to play. D. A. Brodie writes: — Re play by "Bobs"" in last week's column, at note- (0) your correspondent says that 5 1 (the note says 9 5, b'ufc 51 is evidently intended) loses for White. I can only find a draw, and should like "Bobs" to show the win for Black. Indeed; "Bobs" seems to me as far off the win as ever. "Tommy Atkins" writes: — I have just observed in a- back-date Witness some play by "Kruger" for a draw against "Bobs." I subniit tke following play for a. Black win, though, as Lhave not seen all the play published on this position, it is possible that 'I am traversing ground already covered: —

Tommy Atkins.— Thanks for play. Though' there are only five men a-side,' the ramifications of • the position are wonderful. , Next week, probably, one or two correspondents may deal somewhat exhaustively with the problem. They purpose doing so at any rate. So far we have not been able to come to a definite conclusion on, it, as the time we are able to devote to it only discovers new difficulties. A. G. — Obliged to you for report and game. Kruger. — Thanks^ Matters are becoming quite lively, now, and still there's more to foliowv
