Quite unexpectedly the New Zealand Shipping Company's splendid -steamer Papanui arrived at Port Chalmers on Sunday forenoon, and was berthed- at the ocean steamers' wharf in order to take in a special amount of bunker coal, of which she was running short. A vessel was reported passing the Nuggets at 2 p.m. on Saturday bearing the description of the Papanui, but as her signals did not appear to be distinctly made out it was impossible for her identity to be relied on. However, she arrived off the heads late on Saturday night, when, owing to the electric wires being in contact, nothing was known at Port Chalmers of her advent. She steamed into port on Sunday forenoon, in charge of Pilot M'Donald, and was greeted with a considerable amount of enthusiasm by a large assemblage of the citizens, foremost among whom was his Worship the Mayor (Mr' De Maus), who had been made aware that a number of the invalided contingents were on board. The Papanui was visited by the health officer (Dr GT Hodges), who, after due examination, granted her pratique, and the vessel was promptly boarded by crowds of persons desirous of welcoming the returned soldiers. The Papanui is in splendid order, and comes into port under the command of Captain Mayoss, a gentleman jtisfcly famed for the manner in which he brings his vessels here. In all the Papanui brings some 5689 tons of cargo, composed of 1098 tons deadweight and 3770 tons of measurement goods, and, although she has a large portion of that for Dunedin, the stowage of the ship compels her to proceed to Wellington, where the first part of her cargo will bo landed. Thence she returns to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. Her Wellington cargo consists of 2220 tons, for Lyttelton 1743 tons, and for Port Chalmers 1530 tons. In addition to this she brings four thoroughbred racehorses for the sbud of Mr Stead, of Chifetchurch. She lett London on her fourth voyage to New Zealand at 2.30 p.m. of May 30. ______
