AUCKLAND.

Mrs Martin, assistant matron at Mount Uden Gaol, has been promoted to be matron of the Dunedin Gaol, and has left for Dunedin.

Mr F. J. Burgess, who has been appointed warden and S.M. at Clyde. Otogo, left, for his new sphere of duty on TlsSvsday. At the Old-age Pensions Court on the 20th Mr Brabant, S.M., said in losing Mi Burgess the public and ■onrfc were losing a most valued public servant. He congratulated Mr Burgess on his promotion, and wished him success and prosperity in the future. There was no doubt the "oldage pensions entailed considerable labour, but his now retiring friend had never shirked performing all of his duties with credit to himself and benefit to the public service. Mr Burgess also received a complimentary address at the Police Court, it Avas presented by Mr C. E. Button. A number of members of the legal profession were present. The Education Board agreed to-day to join with the North Canterbury Board in asking the Government to make the inspection of private schools compulsory. The board also agreed to appoint a drill instructor for the district.

Cardinal Moran to preach the opening sermon in connection with the Australasian Catholic Congress in St. Mary's I Cathedral, Sydney, early in September, i His Grace will be accompanied by the Rev. Father Ainsworth. Dean Carew, of Greymouth, Archdeacon Devoy, of Wellington, and the Rev. Dr Pestre, head of the Marist Brotherhood in New Zealand, will be present at the opening of the congress, and will afterwards leave for Lyons to attend the General Chapter of Marist Brothers in that" part of France.

A thief stole 14 plates of false teeth, valued at £30, from a dentist's show case in Shortland street on Sunday night. The hearing of the charge of assault, or, alternatively, manslaughter, against Constable Finnerty in connection with the death of Alfred Beonstra was finished on Monday in the Magistrate's Court. The magistrate found there was no case to send to the Supreme Court for trial, and Finnerty was accordingly discharged.
