CHESTER RACES.
On the first day of this meeting Sloan showed fcis acquaintance with the circular type of course by carrying off the first race on the little-thought-of Loupeau, from the Fcxhill Btable. " Horse 3 for coui-se3 " is nowhere more applicable than round the Roodee, observes the Sportsman, and the theory had two notable endorsements during the day. The first instance was that of the outsider Lo Een, who, though he was caught in the last 100 yds by Loupeau, looked all over a winner until close home. His only success last year was gained over -five furlongs on this eour&e in the Prince of Wales's Welter Handicap. M. Cannon rode a very good finish in the concluding race of the day on Quassia, who repeated her victory in the same race last year, p,nd provided the second instance of "horses lor courses." The outsider. Lorsnzaccio, was in front everywhere except at the most important point of the raco, and Cannon pjeioing Tip on the post, Quassia won by a head. On , the second day, the weather- Tfroke up badly. heavy rain falling all the morning. The first race was principally notable for the debut of an own sister to Irish Ivy, called He-dera, a filly belonging to Mr Reid Walker, oncl trained in the Foxhill stable. She was by no means first away at the start, but coining through below the distance, Halsey. who had the mount in the absence of N. Robinson, readily landed her a winner by a, couple of lengths from the favourite, Lady Mm. There
were 14- runners for the Cup, of whom Rensselaei, at 9 to 2, was a decided favourite at flag-fall, though earlier in the day the topweight, Calveley, had been in equal request at slightly longer odds. But the topweight went out in the wagering towards the close, there being a strong run on Manners, who started second favourite at 6to 1. Roughside, who has been hurdle-racing, off and on, during the past two years, and who has certainly earned his corn during his career, for he has run in. 51 races during the six seasons he has been on the turf, was a great tip locally. Being, moreover, the mount of Sloan, he ended up in strong request at 7to 1. He was well drawn, securing the second berth on the inside, and Sloan, taking every advantage of the position, soon, got on the raile and led his field a merry dance. In fact, from the time he went to the front Roughside was never again headed, and though Manners came out in pursuit at the bend for home, he could never get on terms with the leader, who won in a canter by three lengths. On the concluding day Disguise II gave his only opponent Lady Mm, no show in the May Plate. Mr L. de Rothschild's Hulcot won the lOOOaovs Great Cheshire Handicap Stakes very cleverly from Split the Wind. Schoolgirl was a very hot favourite, on the strength of her dead-heat with Roughside at Northampton, but she made but a poor show m the race. Lumley Moor was favourite for the Dee Stakes, which he won easily in good style. He is out of that good mare Lily of Lumley, who won both the Manchester Cup and the Manchester November Handicap for Mr Vyner in 1891. He ran three times last year, and won twice, and is evidently a useful^ colt. There was a fiasco for favourite-backers in the Ormonde Two-year-old Plate, for which odds of" 5 to 2 were 'freely laid on the Schoolbook filly many backers looking to this race as the "get out" on the meeting. To the horror of her supporters and the joy of the ring, she was left at the post when the barrier went up. This contretemps left the finish to Gloucester and Saltatrix, the first-named winning a good race by a neck. St. Vigila was unlucky in tho last race of the meeting, the Earl of Chester's Welter Plate, for which she was made favourite, as she got hampered a\, a critical point of the race, and the well-backed Crarae landed a coup for his owner by a length and a-half from Dark David.
