DIPTON.

June 25. — So far we have had a month of beautiful weather, but extremely cold— fine clear days, with keen wfnds and hard frosty nights, splendid weather for threshing and grain carting. Threshing is pretty nearly over here, and a lot o± grain is being sent away, and although the price is low it is hard to sell. Ploughing has been retarded by the frosts, and" unless a change comes soon the farmers will be considerably behind with such work.

Amusements. — On the sth inst. the United Kinematograph ovA Specialty Company gave a very fair perfoimance to a moderate house; and on the 14th iiist. the members of the Bible Class held a social. The Misses Perry and A. Giller opened the programme with a pianoforte selection, and songs were given by the Misses Macalister and Marshall and Messrs Steadma-n and who all acquitted themselves nios£ creditably, their contributions being much appreciated. " The Eev. J. Gibson Smith delivered his lecture on the "Deeds of the Highland Kegiments," principally those of the Black Watch. It was just a trifle onesided, and, like a Chinese fiddle, inclined to become monotonous for the want of an extra string or two to give it balance, but was much appreciated by the niore intelligent part of the audience. Tea and cake (provided by the ladies of the district) were in abundance, and were freely partaken of during the interval. The entertainment closed with the National Anthem and three cheers for Lord Roberts.

Ova Collecting. — Mr D. Mackay, who for so many years has collected the ova for the Acclimatisation Society, has this year resigned in favour of Mr H. Brown, who is being assisted by Messrs Horman Bros., of Wallacetown; and so far I believe they are meeting with fair success.

Notice. — Mr Whitaker is closing his establishment on Thursday and Friday, the sth and 6th July next, to be a.ble to attend with his family the golden wedding of his parents in Invercargill, and his customers should bear the dates in mind, and so save disappointment if possible. , •
