TWO MEN ARRESTED FOE MATSSLAuGHTER.

fatal Ending to' a quarrel. CHRISTCHURCH, June 21.

- A serious affair occurred in. High street about midnight. It appears that an altercation took place between three men — Daly, Divers, and Trounson. Shortly afterwards Daly was found lying on the footpath with a wound on the head, evidently caused by striking the stone kerbing, and with awound near his eye. Both were bleeding freely. On the arrival of doctors Daly was removed to the hospital. The other two men were arrested, and were brought before the court this morning, when a remand was asked for by the police, as Daly is lying in a critical condition and is unconscious. The remand was granted for a week, accused being released on bail in their own recognisances and in one surety of £50. Daly is young and well known in athletic circles, and is a prominent rowing man. Divers is also a young" man, and is assistant steward on the Eotomahana. Trounson is a jeweller by trade. When arrested Divers admitted that he had been the cause of Daly's injuries, but disclaimed any malicious intent, alleging that he had done it in self-defence.

June 24.

J. Y. Daly, the victim of the midnight quarrel on Wednesday, died at the hospital a.i 10 o'clock last night, without having regained consciousness. The two accused, who - had been liberated on bail when charged with assault, were rearrested early this morning on a charge of manslaughter. The post mortem 'is being performed this afternoon; and the inquest will be held tomorrow morning. • Daly was a member of the Canterbury Rowing Club.' and held the championship for New Zealand as a single sculler, and was one of the New Zealand team which v'sited" Australia some years ago- He was also well known in athletic circles. Henry Harris Divers, who is said to have struck the blow which proved fatal, is an assistant steward on the Rotomahana, and the other accused, Thomas James -Trounson, is a working jeweller in Christclrurch. Both are quite- young men.

June 25

At the Magistrate's Court this morning Henry Harris Divers and Thomas James Trounson were charged with having killed James Daly- They were remanded to Wednesday. Bail was refused. The inquest' has also been adjourned to Wednesday. j
