FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE RAIIWAY,

Just as the express train from the nortl was leaving Palmerston on Monday a serious accident, which unfortunately had a fatal a termination, occurred on the line. As the train was moving out from the station, Mr T. V. Dalgleish, one of the proprietors of the Timaru "Woollen Mills, fell between the dining car and the passenger car adjoining. The train was quickly pulled up. but not before three carriages and a van had passed over him. When he was picked up it was found that both his legs were crushed, and that he had sustained other serious injuries, probably including internal injury. Although not quite dead, he soon succumbed. Accounts differ as to the way in which the accident occurred. One explanation is that Mr Dalgleish wag stepping from the dining car on.to the adjoining passenger car, and, instead of making use of the platform leading from one cay to the other, he attempted to cross by means of the steps, and fell between the two cars. It is also said that he got on the dining car when the train was in motion, and, on discovering his mistake, he alighted and tried to get on to the platform of the next carriage, with the result already stated.
